FreeCAD can convert a STL mesh into a solid, but it won't be the same, i.e. Note that Thingiverse mostly hosts files in STL format, a polygon mesh format that is not really suited to CAD design it's supposed to be an output format for rapid prototyping, and the conversion to STL from a CAD model degrades it.
I CANT SAVE FILES ON CATIA V5R21 FREE
The free version does not allow private storage (because yes, your files are on the cloud, you can't save them on your computer) but maybe you could use it to import models then export them to STEP. Maybe you could look for the free Hobbyist & Makers version of Onshape, a proprietary online CAD app that runs in a browser. igs), two open standard CAD exchange formats STEP is more modern, IGES is mostly deprecated. None exist that can open these formats, because it is extremely difficult to reverse engineer them there are probably not many people who'd actually have the knowledge to do that, never mind the time and energy required (all the FreeCAD developers are volunteers who contribute their own time without being paid). FreeCAD is an open source program, thus it can only rely on open source libraries. Unfortunately, those are proprietary formats that are closed and undocumented. What I would like ideally is for my FreeCAD to be able to open any file that FreeCAD can open.

In particular, which ones should I install so as to enable me to open (import) file types: Should I install all of them, or would that make FreeCAD a bit unwieldy? If not all of them, which ones do you think are most useful to someone like myself? I then go to execute the macro and I see quite a large number of workbenches and macros.

I've got the addons_installer.FCMacro thingie from GitHub and unzipped it where the tutorial directed me, and restared FreeCAD. However, what I've found is that many of the models don't load into basic FreeCAD, which presumably can be rectified with some addons.

and adapt them as necessary to what I'm trying to create. So, I want to invest some real time into building up my skills so that I can create my inventions in 3D CAD (and perhaps even 3D print them myself) so as to demonstrate their functionality in a show-me meeting.Īfter reading through the manual(s) and relevant tutorials, I plan to start by importing some pre-drawn models available from GrabCAD, Thingyverse, etc. By the time I get to having something I can show potential investors, I'm close to the 12 month patent cut-off, which forces me into a 'fire sale'. And at each stage, the other person sort-of gets it when I first explain it to them, but it then passes to an underling, who can't start on it for x weeks, who then forgets what it was he was told, and then I end up getting something not-quite-right, so it has to be re-done, I wait a few more weeks, it's then almost right, etc. But up to now, I've had to rely mostly on my verbal communication skills to explain my ideas to patent agents, prototype builders, potential commercial partners, etc. My passion is inventing things - usually stuff that would fall under a broad 'mechanical engineering' category. I'm an absolute novice to using CAD (even 2D) and my lack of ability has frustrated me hugely in the past, and cost me a heck of a lot too. I installed FreeCAD ( (Git) on 64-bit Win 10) almost a week ago and I have to say that I'm incredibly impressed with what I've seen so far.
